Playing with Packaging: The Best Limited Edition Video Games (Part Two)
Here at VDC Group we don’t just focus on awesome DVD and CD duplication, we also specialise in bespoke packaging. And we love seeing great examples of artistic design for all kinds of media, whether it’s music, movies, or, in this case, video games. So let’s continue our mini-series by taking a butcher’s at…
Dragon Age: Inquisition
The recently released Dragon Age: Inquisition is an epic fantasy game. If you like Lord of the Rings and The Elder Scrolls, it’s a must-have – swords, dragons magic and moral dilemmas which affect the narrative all wrapped up in a neat little bundle. That bundle, if you picked up the Inquisitor’s Edition, comes in a stylish chest-style case which perfectly matches the tone and setting of the game. Tucked away inside the Inquisitor’s chest are ornamental war pieces, coins, a badge, an ink and quill set, a world map and lockpick set because we’re all spies at heart. Oh, and a steel book containing – what else? – the actual game. It’s the perfect thematic complement to a game that’s all about immersing yourself in the world.
Call of Duty
When it comes to collector’s editions, Call of Duty always goes one step beyond. Sure, the exterior box may not be much to look at, but the way they jam-pack an arsenal of goodies inside sure is. It’s a miracle of engineering and ergonomic design – from Modern Warfare 2’s night vision goggles and bust, to the slick Ghosts Prestige Edition with a tactical HD camera; from Black Ops II’s care package design and remote control drone, to this year’s offering of Advanced Warfare which comes packaged inside an exoskeleton and helmet, and even secretes a couple of guns found in the first-person shooter.
Tomb Raider
Last year saw the revival of PlayStation icon and bad-ass raider of tombs, Lara Croft. With a realistic look, a genuine story arc and a focus on how she became the woman gamers know and love, it was a more gritty and narrative-focussed take on Tomb Raider. And what better way to show how hardened she is by delivering the rebooted franchise complete with a rusted, battered survival tin, survival pouch, and poseable 8” figurine. Add to that a book of artwork and a world map and you’ll be ready to take on the agents of evil on a faraway island, right? Or you could just play the game.
