In a visual culture like the one we live in today, images are the fastest and most effective way to transmit ideas and concepts to your clients. CDs and DVDs are one of the best promotional tools, as they allow you to distribute high-quality content in a cost-effective manner. Designing the packaging is very important – you want your clients to feel curious until the point they grab it. However, the most dismissed part of the design is – perhaps – the one that your clients will notice first: the spine.
No matter how beautiful or attractive the cover of your DVD is, when it’s on the shelf, the only visible part will be the spine. Want to know how to make the most of this little space and truly make them stand out on the shelf?
Bleeds Are Important
Designing a spine is quite a big challenge: on a standard CD case, there’s barely 0.4 inches width to place the title, your company name, logo and other information that may still be required. With so many things to put on it, you might be considering taking as much space as you can – but this is not the best idea. Remember that the printer would need at least a 0.1 inches bleed to be accurate.
Adjust the Spine
If you are designing a cover for a group of three DVDs or more, the spine of the case that will include them all will be naturally larger. Therefore, remember to adjust this new width to the design to avoid surprises afterwards. Good news is that you will be having more space this way.
The Safety Area
Including images in the spine is always a good idea – as we said, we live in a visual culture. It can be the logo of your company, because this is a simple motif that will effectively attract the attention of your clients. To make sure that no important bit is cut off, always allow for a ‘safety area’ around the image. The extra space around it will also make it more noticeable to the human eye.
Clear Fonts
The most important thing is to choose one which is simple because, due to the reduced space of the spine, you want it to be readable in just a glimpse. Once you have assured this, the rest depends on the kind of audience you want to attract. For instance, formal fonts such as ‘garamond’ will be more meaningful for a serious audience.
